Reed beds, wetlands, dry grasslands, sandy steppes, pastures, and salt pans provide diverse habitats, especially for the birdlife. The national park is therefore a paradise for bird watchers. No wonder that the Pannonian Bird Experience – the trade fair for ornithologists and bird lovers – is held here each year.
More than 340 different bird species have been detected in the area around Lake Neusiedl. Large colonies of great white, gray, purple, night and little herons breed here, as well as an abundance of songbirds, bee-eaters, and even great bustards. Thanks to excellent cooperation between nature conservation and agriculture, the heaviest flying bird in the world – the great bustard - has been saved from extinction in recent decades.
Visitors can discover all of these animals, the landscape, and much more at the park. The best place to start is the National Park Center in Illmitz, which is open all year round. An exhibition on the national park, friendly and helpful employees, and guided tours through the Seewinkel countryside await you!
