ESTERHÁZY WINERY – Reflection on Site and Place

Wine has a long tradition at Esterházy: The first records date back to 1612, and cellar records go back to 1758. Nearly two decades ago, the vinification of grapes found a contemporary new home in Trausdorf am Leithaberg. In 2023, an important milestone was set with the completion of organic certification. Handpicked grapes from six surrounding municipalities – up to a maximum of ten kilometers from the winery – thrive on shell limestone and mica slate on the eastern foothills of the Alps in Northern Burgenland. Gentle vine pruning, careful soil cultivation, and organic compost from the Esterhazy organic farm promote the
vitality of the plants and ensure optimal grape growth. The interplay of different microclimates and the consistent renunciation of irrigation lead
to expressive cool-climate wines, which are classified into a three-tier quality pyramid: regional wine, local wine, and single vineyard wine. Since 2023, in addition to traditional oak barrels, the winery also uses three 3,800-liter concrete eggs made of basalt. Both the basalt, which is mined in the Esterhazy Pauliberg Basalt Quarry, and the oak wood from the own forests at Leithaberg underline the regional origin of the wines. The result is elegant wines with a mineral character that reflect the uniqueness of the terroir.
The Kalandahaus at the winery and the event facilities within the winery itself provide the framework for extraordinary celebrations and events. As part of Tour & Tastings, there is the opportunity to taste selected wines and tour the cellar.
