Family Wellanschitz
Our families’ vineyards in Neckenmarkt are located at the foothills of the Alps, in the Ödenburger Gebirge, right on the border of Hungary. The highly situated vineyards have slate, gneiss and lime soils, which make it possible to have a multitude of characters. Our main grape variety and also our passion for winemaking is the autochthon red grape Blaufränkisch. It has been grown here for centuries and therefore adapted to the conditions of the area and is able to showcase the regions characteristics in the wines. Our family has produced wine for several generations, we preserve traditional values and personally work in our vineyards to guarantee uniquely structured wines that bear the signature of Wellanschitz. Now 4 memebers of the family are working in the vineyards, cellar and sales:
Stefan David, his parents Stefan Paul and Christine together with Georg (Stefan Pauls brother)
Wellanschitz tradition
Fifty years ago we bottled our first Blaufränkisch. Now we’re looking back on a long tradition, which we want to continue in the fashion it began. The Neckenmarkter Fahnenschwinger (Flagwaver of Neckenmarkt) is the best way to show how history can be filled into bottles. Therefore we selected the oldest parts of the single vineyard Hochberg and vinified those grapes gentle to honor this tradition. The Blaufränkisch is from vines, which are grown for over 50 years on a sparse slaty soil. We didn’t use any treatments during the whole vinification, just healthy grapes, spontaneously fermented in open wooden casks made by Austrian coopers. Later the wine was directly bottled from the barrels without filtration. This wine is a tribute to Blaufränkisch and the place where it is grown, which allows such unique style.
