A colorful mixture
Not everything was better in the past, but some things were different. Until the 1980s, we relied on mixed farming, on arable farming, our bulls and our pigs. Wine also played a role back then, but it was only an extra.
The bull and the horns
In 1986 we took the bull by the horns and from then on we made the grape the protagonist. Over the years, four hectares of vineyards have become 40. They are situated in selected locations in and around Neckenmarkt as well as in Horitschon and are cultivated by our own hands and with much love. The knowledge of the soil is central: because sometimes just a few meters turn a good wine into an excellent one.
Mineral, spicy, filigree!
In Neckenmarkt we find clay, mica slate in the soil, as well as orthogneiss and shell limestone. This makes the Blaufränkisch, which is cultivated nowhere in the world as intensively as in Central Burgenland, mineral, salty, yes: filigree! The deep loamy soil proves to be an ideal water reservoir in dry years. It gives our parade variety - the Blaufränksich - strength and structure. We are not the only ones who are happy about the 300 days of sunshine that the Pannonian climate gives us: the vines thank us with excellent grape quality.
Everything remains different
Winemaking is a subtle interplay of soil and climate, and of age-old handicrafts that have been refined into culture over generations. While the soil remains the same, the weather plays by its own rules each year. This explains why the wines of Wieder taste a little different every year, are not uniform but individual.
Preserving the old to create the new
Instead of uprooting and replanting vineyards after 25 or 30 years, as was once the custom, we care for our vines, which are 60, 70, even up to 80 years old. The effort is great, but the effort, it is worth it. Our old vines only bear as many grapes as the vine can handle. In general, the yield of old vines decreases. And that is good! The grapes are better nourished, have a denser, more complex aroma.
Think objectively, read selectively
We are happy about a lot of intact nature, act pragmatically and sometimes stubbornly: You can see us in late summer and autumn with the harvesting shears in one hand and the bucket in the other. The fact that we harvest our grapes by hand is not only a question of quality, but also one of respect: for the plant and for the people who work on the wine all year round and reap the fruits of their success in the fall.
