In 1630 the inhabitants of the market town of Nikolaus Esterházy were allowed to surround their settlement with a strong defensive wall, which, together with the three gates - the Turk Gate in the west, the Bruck Gate in the northeast and the Rust Gate in the south - has been largely preserved. The embrasured wall that now surrounds the city centre is considered to be the best preserved city wall in Burgenland.
