The Rohrbach pond meadows are located in a basin at the foot of the steep, sun-kissed slopes of the Rohrbacher Kogel nature reserve. The large water and reed areas are an important habitat for a number of waterfowl and several threatened species of amphibian. A well-developed 6-kilometer long cycle path and hiking trail is the ideal place to discover the highly diverse flora and fauna of this unique nature and conservation area.
There are 8 beautifully designed rest and experience stops along the way – also accessible for wheelchairs and strollers – providing ample opportunity to pause or study the delightful landscape of the Rohrbacher Kogel, characterized by natural meadows, dry grasslands, and fruit and wine growing areas. The pond meadows are considered an inside tip among birdwatchers because protected and rare species breed in this nature and conservation area upstream of the Kogelberg: the Western Marsh Harrier, Little Bittern, Spotted Crake, and several species of heron, such as the Great White Heron, Gray Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, and Purple Heron. Amphibians also feel at home in the mild waters. More than 10,000 common and agile frogs, common toads, European fire-bellied toads, and Danube crested newts come here to spawn and croak loudly each year.
The Rohrbach pond meadows can be visited all year round at any time!
