The St. Margarethen quarry is one of the largest and oldest quarries in Europe. The valuable St. Margarethener limestone has been used since antiquity. It is still being mined today and has been used, among other things, in the restoration of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna as well as in the construction of many buildings along the Vienna Ring Road. The giant of prehistory has released numerous significant fossils (some up to 25 million years old) in the 20th century. Since 2001, the St. Margarethen quarry, together with the Fertö-Neusiedler Lake region, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
The tour makes the millions of years of history of the quarry excitingly tangible!
