The community of Mörbisch am See, known as a tourist destination, wine-growing community, and especially as a festival location, is well-known far beyond the borders of our country. Mörbisch am See is located on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl and borders Hungary near Kroisbach - Fertörakos. The area totals 2,805 ha. Mörbisch is situated 118 meters above sea level, making it one of the lowest-lying municipalities in Austria. Our community has 2,378 residents. Our village was first officially mentioned in 1254. The name at that time was "possessio Megyes," which loosely translates to "soft village." Until 1921, the year when Burgenland became part of Austria, the official designation was "Fertömegyes" - "Fertö" means lake. The Croatian designation is "Merbis." The locals of Mörbisch say "Miawisch." The oldest part of our community is the main street, from which so-called "Hofgassen" extend to both sides. In each Hofgasse (stretch or narrow farms), typically four farmers lived. A special feature is the covered stairways adorned with columns, known as "Vorhallenhäuser" or "Arkadenstiegen." Our Hofgassen have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2003.
