Since the 1970s, Prof. Gerhard Kisser has disassembled over 30 buildings from the last three centuries in various towns of Burgenland, lovingly rebuilt them, and thus preserved them from decay or final demolition. Wood, clay, and straw are the traditional materials of the buildings, which are mostly under monument protection today.

The residential houses, wine cellars, storage buildings, barns, workshops, and other structures house a wealth of agricultural utensils and tools, providing a comprehensive insight into the past agricultural working and living environment of Pannonia.

For physical well-being, the rustic tavern offers refreshments. Children can enjoy the playground. The "village shop" features regional culinary products and handicrafts. As part of the "Summer Academy for the Preservation of Your Personal Cultural Heritage" and the general course offerings, there is an extensive range of courses available annually.

In 2018, the open-air museum was chosen as the "Most Beautiful Place in Burgenland."
