From the 1970s onwards Prof. Gerhard Kisser dismantled more than 30 buildings in various Burgenland villages, had them reerected here with loving care and thus saved them from dilapidation and eventual destruction. Wood, mud and straw constitute the local building materials of these houses, most of which are listed under heritage protection by now.
The homesteads, wine cellars, storage sheds, barns, workshops and other rural buildings contain a wealth of local tools and articles of daily use, that allow a comprehensive view of rural life and work in Pannonia. The snug barn bar and the village shop provide the guests with local food and crafts articles. Children enjoy the playground on site. Numerous cultural events, concerts, arts exhibitions and courses for traditional craft skills boost the yearly agenda.
Within the framework of the "Summer Academy for the Preservation of Your Personal Cultural Assets" and in the general course program, there is a wide range of courses offered every year.
In 2018 the open air museum was elected the most beautiful spot in all of Burgenland.
