Salt lakes - unique habitats excursion

08.04. - 12.09.2025

From primeval crabs to wading birds and salt plants - experience one of Europe's rarest habitats with us!

In the far east of Austria you can find a very special habitat for Central Europe: the salt lakes. Here in the soda water live for example primeval crabs, which exist in their kind already since the time of the dinosaurs and which serve today as important food for birds such as the avocet. Plants that are also found on seashores grow along the salty edges of the lakes. And the constant change between wetness and dryness constantly creates new small habitats. But these extraordinary areas are severely threatened: of once 140 lakes, only 45 remain today.
