PROGRAM
Franz Liszt:

Festive march for the Goethe anniversary celebrations p. 115
Tasso: Lamento e Trionfo - Symphonic Poem No. 2 after Goethe, p. 96
Artists' procession for the Schiller celebration 1859, p. 114
The Ideals - Symphonic Poem No. 12 after Schiller, p. 106

Liszt was constantly surrounded by poetry in the classical city of Weimar. He took up the legacy of Goethe and Schiller there and drew inspiration for many of his works from the literary works of the two poets. The symphonic poem "The Ideals" is based on Schiller's poem of the same name, which describes the transience of ideals and youth. As part of the celebrations for Goethe's 100th birthday in 1849, Liszt composed a large festive march especially for the occasion and Liszt's symphonic poem "Tasso" was premiered together with Goethe's play "Torquato Tasso". Music and poetry: a synthesis of the arts!
