Cranes and geese - harbingers of winter

30.10.2024

In late autumn the air of the Seewinkel is filled with the calls of cranes and geese. They are the atmospheric harbingers of winter and an unmistakable sign that autumn is coming to an end.

From the end of October the time has come - the cranes are coming! At the turn of the month you have a good chance to observe groups of several hundred cranes in the national park. Their unmistakable contact calls can be heard from far away. Also the increasing number of gray and white-fronted geese is a clear indication that winter is already around the corner. And if you look closely, you may be lucky enough to spot the rare red-breasted geese, lesser white-fronted geese or bean geese among the large flock of geese.
