Andreas Vitásek - Mr Karl

19.01.2025

That's not who we are. Or is it?

“Mr. Karl” is a proven navigation aid in the search for the Austrian soul. Times may change, but some things remain. Because, as Bertolt Brecht said, “the womb still is fertile from which that crawled.”

With the monologue “Mr. Karl,” Helmut Qualtinger and Carl Merz wrote Austrian theater history. Originally written for television and premiered in a TV version in 1961, the play was subsequently performed on numerous stages. In the 1960s, it led to fierce controversies in Austria – with their portrayal of the average citizen as an accomplice, the authors exposed the Austrian soul of post-war Austria. Andreas Vitásek brings the play to the stage, word for word.
