Franz Herzog, conductor
The fairy tale "The Emperor's Nightingale" by Hans Christian Andersen was set to music by Latvian composer Uģis Prauliņš in 2010. This composition for choir, flute and narrator begins mystically and develops into a radiant climax. Prauliņš masterfully combines folk, pop, medieval, Renaissance and modern classical music to create an original mixture of sounds that is immediately captivating. The music transports us to a fairytale time in which an emperor lives in a beautiful castle, surpassed only by his garden. A nightingale lives in a remote forest in this garden. The work tells the story of the emperor and the nightingale in impressive images, carried by choral and flute sounds that bring the magnificent scenes and the nightingale's song to life.
The "Vocalforum Graz" initiated the German version of the work, which brings the work to life for German-speaking audiences. The chamber choir is formed by Vocalforum Graz under the direction of Franz M. Herzog, the flute sounds come from the renowned flautist Maria Fedotova and the narrator part is taken on by the Austrian actor Michael Dangl. This outstanding cast brings the fairytale world to life.
