Schloss Halbturn - a cultural treasure at Lake Neusiedl
Schloss Halbturn, one of the most significant Baroque buildings in Burgenland, once served the imperial house as a hunting and summer residence. It was built in 1711 by Lucas von Hildebrandt, a master of Baroque architecture, under Emperor Charles VI. It later passed into the private ownership of the House of Habsburg-Lothringen through Maria Theresa. She gifted the castle to her favorite daughter Archduchess Marie-Christine on her marriage to Duke Albert-Casimir of Saxe-Teschen, the founder of the “Albertina” in Vienna. As a special gift, Maria Theresa had the impressive ceiling fresco “Allegory of Time and Light” created by Franz-Anton Maulbertsch in 1756.
Many significant personalities from Austria and Hungary have shaped the history of the castle, which remains in private ownership to this day.
Today, Schloss Halbturn, with its magnificent park, is a popular excursion destination and cultural center. Throughout the year, a variety of events take place here: annually changing exhibitions, the renowned concert series of the “Halbturner Schlosskonzerte”, the atmospheric fair “Gartenlust”, as well as the festive “Pannonian Christmas Market” make the castle a cultural and festive meeting place at any time of the year.
